Privacy Policy
Effective date: October 21, 2026
This policy explains how information is handled in Director Mode for iPhone and iPad and on www.director-mode.com.
Claudio Ripalti, publisher of Director Mode, is the controller of personal data processed by us as described in this policy. For privacy questions or requests, contact directormodeapp@gmail.com.
How the app works
Director Mode connects directly to compatible cameras over a local network or, where supported, by USB. It receives live previews and camera information and sends camera control commands. A Director Mode account is not required.
The app does not upload camera previews, pairing credentials, imported files, Wi-Fi network names or app usage analytics to servers operated by us. It does not contain advertising, third-party analytics SDKs or third-party crash-reporting SDKs.
The app may request:
Local Network permission, to discover and communicate with compatible cameras.
Location permission, to display the name of the Wi-Fi network connected to your device. The app does not request or use geographic coordinates for this feature.
Camera authorisation, to connect to and control supported Sony cameras over USB and, separately, when you choose to use your device’s camera to read pairing information displayed by a Sony camera. Recognition takes place on the device; the app does not upload the scanned images to us.
When you choose files or photos for supported imports, the app reads the items you select to provide that function. You can manage system permissions in iOS or iPadOS Settings. Denying or withdrawing a permission may limit the related function.
Information stored on your device
Camera addresses, registration details and preferences are stored locally. Camera passwords and certain pairing security records are stored in the device’s Keychain. Other connection details, including some usernames, are also stored in local preferences.
Imported LUTs and picture overlays are stored in the app’s local storage. We do not operate a cloud synchronisation or backup service for these materials. Depending on your device settings, local app data may be included in backups managed by Apple or in device backups you create.
Forget Saved Cameras removes saved camera registrations and associated credentials held by the app. It does not reset the physical camera or remove imported LUTs and overlays.
In version 1.0, the in-app controls for deleting imported LUTs and overlays require Pro. If those controls are unavailable, deleting the app using Delete App in system Settings removes its local app files. Offload App retains documents and data. Deleting the app does not necessarily remove Keychain records or existing backups. Use Forget Saved Cameras before deleting the app if you also want to remove its saved camera credentials.
We cannot remotely access or erase information stored only on your device. Removing the app does not delete correspondence or other information you have already sent to us.
Director Mode Pro and Apple services
Director Mode Pro is purchased through Apple’s in-app purchase system. Apple handles payment and related account information under its own privacy terms.
The app receives and verifies signed transaction and entitlement information to enable Pro, restore purchases and recognise changes such as refunds or revocations. This information is processed locally by the app and is not sent to a purchase-verification server operated by us. The app does not receive your payment card details or Apple Account password.
Separately, Apple may make purchase, sales, crash, diagnostic or usage reports available to us under its applicable terms and, where relevant, your sharing settings. We may use reports we receive to administer the product, understand its performance, investigate problems and improve compatibility and reliability.
Apple’s privacy information:
Support and other enquiries
When you contact us by email or through a website form, we receive the information you provide. This may include your name, email address, message, camera and device details, and any attachments or diagnostic information you choose to send.
We use this information to respond to support, compatibility, press, partnership and general enquiries, investigate reported problems, and manage related correspondence.
Providing this information is voluntary, although an email address and details of your request may be necessary for us to respond. You can use the app without contacting us. Please do not send passwords, payment card details or unrelated sensitive information.
Contacting us does not subscribe you to marketing messages. We do not sell or rent the information you provide in enquiries.
Former beta participants and previous update subscriptions
New TestFlight access requests and newsletter registrations are no longer offered on this website. Removing these forms does not automatically delete information previously provided.
We may retain former beta applications, tester contact details and feedback to follow up on reported issues and evaluate compatibility. Apple may process information associated with previously distributed TestFlight builds and make reports or feedback available to us under its TestFlight privacy terms:
If you previously requested news and updates, we may retain your email address and subscription preferences to manage that request. Any marketing updates rely on your consent. You can withdraw that consent at any time by contacting directormodeapp@gmail.com. A beta application or support request alone is not treated as marketing consent.
Website hosting, technical information and cookies
This website is hosted by Squarespace. Visits to the website may involve processing of IP addresses, browser and device information, pages requested, timestamps, cookies, and security or diagnostic information.
Squarespace processes website form submissions and makes them available to us through its form and contact tools. Our contact form also uses Google reCAPTCHA to help prevent spam and automated abuse. This involves processing technical information about the browser, device and interactions needed for that security service.
Necessary cookies support security and core website functions. Optional analytics or preference cookies, where enabled, are subject to applicable consent requirements and the choices made through the cookie banner. Use Manage Cookies when the banner is displayed to review the available choices. Your browser settings also allow you to block or delete cookies; doing so may affect website functions.
These website practices also apply when you open the website or online documentation through a link inside the app. The app does not attach camera credentials, previews or purchase information to those links. Links to other websites are subject to the privacy practices of their operators.
Provider information:
Legal bases for processing
Where the General Data Protection Regulation applies, we rely on:
Article 6(1)(b), where processing is necessary to provide a service you request or take steps at your request before entering into a contract.
Article 6(1)(f), for legitimate interests in responding to enquiries, managing former beta feedback, protecting the website against abuse, diagnosing problems and improving the app’s reliability. We consider the necessity of the processing and its effect on your rights.
Article 6(1)(a), for consent-based activities, including optional cookies where consent is required and updates you previously requested. Consent can be withdrawn without affecting the lawfulness of earlier processing.
Article 6(1)(c), where processing is necessary to meet a legal obligation.
System permissions used for local app functions are managed separately through your device settings.
Service providers, disclosures and international transfers
The providers involved in these activities include:
Squarespace, for website hosting, forms and contact storage.
Google, for email and website spam prevention.
Apple, for app distribution, purchases and related reporting.
Information is disclosed only as needed for the purposes described in this policy. Where a provider processes information on our behalf, applicable service terms and data protection arrangements govern its handling. Providers may also process information for their own purposes under their respective privacy notices.
Information may also be disclosed where required by law or reasonably necessary to establish or defend legal claims.
Providers may process information outside the European Economic Area, including in the United States. Where required, applicable transfer safeguards include adequacy decisions, the EU-US Data Privacy Framework where the recipient and processing are covered, or approved Standard Contractual Clauses. The safeguards depend on the provider and service. Further information is available in the provider notices above and on request to directormodeapp@gmail.com.
Data retention
We keep information only for as long as needed for the purposes described in this policy.
Our normal retention periods are:
Unsuccessful beta applications: up to six months from submission.
Former tester details, TestFlight feedback and related technical correspondence: up to twenty-four months after the last testing interaction.
Support, press, partnership and general correspondence: up to twenty-four months after the last exchange.
Previous update subscriptions: until consent is withdrawn or the update service or purpose ends, with only necessary consent or opt-out records retained afterwards where justified.
Website cookies and technical records: according to the relevant cookie settings, purpose and provider retention arrangements.
Apple reports retained by us are kept only as needed for troubleshooting, product administration or legal requirements. Information may be retained longer where necessary to meet legal obligations, resolve disputes, investigate security incidents or establish or defend legal claims. This does not mean that all information is retained for those longer periods.
Local app data and backups are subject to the controls described under Information stored on your device. Apple independently determines retention for information it processes under its own terms.
Your rights
Depending on applicable law, you may request:
access to your personal data;
correction of inaccurate or incomplete information;
deletion of your personal data;
restriction of processing;
data portability.
You may also object to processing based on legitimate interests. Where processing relies on consent, you may withdraw it at any time.
Send requests to directormodeapp@gmail.com. We may ask for information reasonably needed to verify your identity. Rights may be subject to applicable legal conditions and exceptions.
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a competent data protection authority, including the authority where you habitually live or work or where an alleged infringement occurred. In Italy, this is the Garante per la protezione dei dati personali:
Security and changes to this policy
We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect the information we handle and limit access to people who need it for the purposes described here. No storage or transmission method can provide an absolute guarantee of security.
We may update this policy when the app, website or our practices change. The effective date above identifies the current version. Where required, we will provide additional notice of material changes.
